KUALA LUMPUR, 11 August 2025 – ESG Malaysia proudly supported the ASEAN Sustainable Urbanisation Forum (ASUF) 2025, held from 10 to 15 August at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, as part of Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship. The forum brought together ASEAN leaders, policy makers, industry players, and civil society to advance the region’s sustainable urbanisation agenda.

As a key knowledge partner, ESG Malaysia facilitated the business stakeholders engagements with focus on aligning urban development pathways with the principles of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG).

Key Ministerial Insights

At the joint opening of ASUF, the Minister of Housing and Local Government (KPKT), YB Tuan Nga Kor Ming, who also serves as President of the UN-Habitat Assembly, called for cities that are not only “liveable” but also “lovable. His keynote highlighted Malaysia’s leadership in sustainable housing and urban development, including:

  • Delivery of 492,000 affordable homes, nearly 98.4% of the 12th Malaysia Plan target.

  • Integration of sustainable housing features such as solar panels, rainwater harvesting, and urban farming.

  • Transformation of under-utilised public housing spaces into community hubs via Urbanice Malaysia.

  • Rollout of Kita Untuk Kita community grants to empower urban poor communities.

  • Securing USD 20 million from the Global Climate Adaptation Fund to implement nature-based climate solutions.

  • Expansion of waste-to-energy plants to support Malaysia’s 70% renewable energy target by 2050.

YB Nga stressed that sustainable cities must be developed through people-public-private partnerships, in line with the UN SDGs, the New Urban Agenda, and the ASEAN Smart Cities Network.

During the Joint Stakeholders Assembly, Deputy Minister of Housing and Local Government, YB Datuk Hajah Aiman Athirah Binti Sabu, emphasized the importance of inclusive, balanced, and sustainable urban growth. She underscored the pivotal role of:

  • Women at grassroots levels as drivers of resilience and innovation.

  • Youth as leaders of digital transformation.

  • Businesses as catalysts for inclusive growth and sustainable solutions.

She reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to advancing a people-centred urban agenda, aligned with the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 and the ASEAN Sustainable Urbanisation Strategy.

ESG Malaysia’s Contribution

Through its participation, ESG Malaysia strengthened multi-stakeholder dialogues and provided perspectives on embedding ESG principles into urban policy and practice. The forum also paved the way for forward-looking initiatives such as the Kuala Lumpur Sustainable Declaration and the proposed ASEAN Sustainable Centre, which will advance collaboration on resilient, inclusive urbanisation across ASEAN.
